"This was the first painting of a series with a model named Chelsea. She is a thoroughbred mare. I met her a couple of years ago at a barn I was riding at. I developed somewhat of a mare crush then, with her glorious dapples and elegant lines. I was so excited when she finally was available to pose for me.
I took a good study of the values her coat was showing me. Dark bay horses can sometimes trick you, because while they are dark, they reflect so much light when their coat is healthy and shiny. I was particularly drawn to a sexy line in her hindquarters where the light tan dapples met the dark."
